Ralph Coombs Obituary

Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories, his children: Wayne (Adelaide), Marystown, NL, Doreen (Ivan Skinner), St.Alban’s, NL, Sandra (Andy Taylor), Corner Brook, NL, Brenda (Pat Organ), CBS, NL, David (Valerie), St. Alban’s, NL & Mervin (Sonya), Cambridge, ON. Grandchildren: Mark, Kelly, Tracy, Adam, Bailey, Luke, Michael, Nicolas & Morgan. Great grandchildren: Carter, Kyle, Kara & Wyatt. As well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Ralph was predeceased by his wife Beatrice (nee Engram)and grandson Chad Coombs. Parents Elizabeth and Abraham Coombs. Siblings Freeman Coombs, Helen Coombs, Charlie Coombs & Hubert Coombs. Ralph left school at a young age to go in the woods with his father. His knowledge and skills gained there lead to a lifetime of logging. He was featured in an episode of land and sea as “The Little Lumberjack” while still cutting wood at age 89. His happy place was undoubtedly in the woods. He was an avid hunter and salmon fisher. Always the ultimate provider for his family. Ralph took on many different roles throughout his career in logging and construction. While he often recalled stories of the “good camps” he stayed at in Wawa and all across Newfoundland and Labrador, his heart always remained in Bay d’espoir where his roots were planted for 93 years. On the same plot of land in head of the bay where he grew up, he built a house where he raised 6 children with his beloved Beatrice. Together they created a home that became the happy and safe place for their children and grandchildren (who affectionately called him Papa) to gather in good times and in bad. Ralph was a highly respected man, known for his kind and courteous ways with an unforgettable smile. He was steady and sweet, hard working and loving. They truly don’t make them like Ralph anymore. While we will miss our Dad/ Papa and the impact his presence had on our lives more than we could ever express, we find great comfort in knowing he is reunited with our mother, whom he cherished, and had missed so deeply every day since she left 4 years ago. The epitome of true love. A special thanks to the staff at Admiral’s Coast Retirement Center, in Conception Bay South, who took exemplary care of Dad in his last 3 years. Their ocean view facility, with horses roaming in the fields surrounding it, with staff that treated him as their own, was the perfect place for Dad to spend his final years. We are eternally grateful for your care and compassion.
